Wang Technology Receives MTA Approval For Omnidots SWARM Vibration on Multiple Projects

Omnidots’ is proud to announce that our partner Wang Technology, one of the premier vibration monitoring and geotechnical instrumentation firms in the Northeast United States, has received permission to use Omnidots SWARM Vibration monitors on a number of projects for the New York Metro Transit Authority (MTA).

About Wang Technology

Wang Technology is the leading geotechnical and structural instrumentation firm in its area. With offices in New Jersey and California, Wang Technology can serve various regions throughout the continental United States.

About MTA and construction projects

The MTA is the Metro Transit Authority of New York, which manages all bridges and tunnels in the city. They have strict monitoring requirements for their projects, which require vibration monitoring on any project in proximity to one of these structures (which is most projects in the city). The MTA historically has required manned monitoring (in-person readings of the vibration monitor) on many tunnel projects.

MTA approves Omnidots remote monitoring system

The MTA has notoriously high standards for monitoring hardware and has previously allowed only select vibration monitor manufacturers to operate on projects in proximity to MTA assets, such as bridges, tunnels, and elevated rail lines. Additionally, MTA requirements for in-person monitoring have been adjusted to allow for remote monitoring due to the high reliability of our remote monitoring systems. Omnidots' Honeycomb dashboard and servers were online 100% in 2023 with zero downtime.

Due to the high density of public transportation systems in New York, MTA regulations affect the majority of projects in one of the largest construction markets in the world. Wang Technology's hard work, excellent reputation, and tenacity have resulted in permission to use Omnidots SWARM Vibration on select projects, including keystone projects such as the Long Island City Yard Restoration and Resiliency project and the Penn Station Access Project.

Monitoring using a 4G cell modem

Long Island City Yard project

For the Long Island City Yard project, Wang Technology was required to install monitors in a tunnel with no immediate access to cellular, wifi, or ethernet connection. By utilizing a 4G cell modem on the surface, they were able to transmit a private wifi signal through the tunnel and provide real-time monitoring in a challenging environment. Wang Technology stated that the SWARM Vibration met all of the required specifications and “…increased reliability and data upload speeds helped get the SWARM units approved for the job”.

Penn Station Access project

At the Penn Station Access project, four new Metro-North rail stations are being constructed to connect north metro residents to Manhattan. Additionally, improvements to existing infrastructure are being made along this route. Wang Technology utilized solar and battery setups for monitoring of surface assets with 4G cellular connectivity and Wang Technology mentioned “the ease of installation and low power consumption of the SWARM (Vibration) units made installation quick and relatively easy.”

MTA satisfied with performance SWARM Vibration monitors

Wang Technology stated that the MTA has been satisfied with the performance of the SWARM Vibration monitors, especially with “receiving the data in real-time”. While permission for use of the SWARM Vibration monitor is still on a case-by-case basis, Wang Technology hopes that the success of these and other projects paves the way for widespread acceptance, and they will continue to advocate for the addition of SWARM Vibration to all MTA vibration specifications.

Omnidots is proud to partner with Wang Technology on these and many other projects and bring our proven technology to new and challenging markets. We are grateful for Wang Technology's hard work in paving the way for increased acceptance of our remote monitoring and MEMS sensor-based vibration monitors.
